Manual for CALLDOS.EXE:
DOS-Version of the Radio Amateur Callbook CD-ROM Summer 1999
HOW TO START:
The program operates directly from the CD-ROM. No installation on your
hard disk is needed. To start the program, simply use the following command:
If drive "D:" designates your CD-ROM drive, type in
D:\CALLDOS
and press the enter key.
If drive "F:" designates your CD-ROM drive, type in
F:\CALLDOS
and press the enter key.
GENERAL:
The Radio Amateur Callbook CD-ROM Summer 1997 offers access to more than
1,400,000 radio amateur call signs. Like the printed version, this is the
most complete database existing.
The CD-ROM contains three programs:
- The DOS version (named CALLDOS.EXE)
- and the Windows version (named CALLBOOK.EXE).
- The program SETUP.EXE is needed by the windows version only.
In this manual, only the DOS version is discussed.
HOW TO USE THE DOS VERSION:
Features:
- The DOS-Version allows a search by call sign. In the U.S. portion of the
database additional searches are allowed by name, city, county and ZIP.
- Navigation inside the database is possible by moving around in steps of
1, 10, 100 and 1000.
- Labels can be printed. The program can send a form feed to the printer
to eject the current page. This is useful for laser printers.
- You can change the color scheme of the program, the size of the
labels you use and the style of labels to be printed.
The screen of the DOS program is divided into three parts:
1. A menu bar at the top of the screen
2. A status line displaying hints at the bottom of the screen
3. The working area between the menu bar and the status line
The working area is divided into a number of items. Most of these items
are selectable, some other are not. Examples for selectable items:
The "Sort by" and the "Database" radio buttons, the buttons "-1000",
"-100" etc. below, and the fields "Call", "ZIP", "County".
The items not selectable are items like "Country", "QTH" or "State".
You can select items either by clicking on them with your mouse or selecting
them by keyboard. To select by keyboard, use the Tab key. Every time you
use the tab key, the next item is selected. If you use Shift+Tab, the
previous item is selected.
Some of the items have a highlighted character in their label, e.g.
the "C" in "Call". You can use this character with the Alt key to
select such an item directly. Example: By pressing Alt+C, the "Call"
field will be selected.
Note that the buttons "-1000", "-100" etc. do not have highlighted
characters. For your convenience, there are shortcuts for them, also:
-1000: Ctrl+Home
-100: Ctrl+PgUp
-10: PgUp
-1: Up arrow
+1: Down arrow
+10: PgDn
+100: Ctrl+PgDn
+1000: Ctrl+End
HOW TO USE THE SELECT ITEMS OPTION:
There are three kinds of selectable items:
1. Radio buttons ("Sort by" and "Database")
2. Buttons ("-1000", "-100", etc.)
3. Edit fields ("Call", "ZIP" and "County")
There is a small description explaining the use of these items below.
Radio buttons:
With radio buttons, you can select one out of a number of states. Only
one state in a group of radio buttons can be active at a time.
Mouse:
Click on the requested value (e.g. "Intl" in "Database")
Keyboard:
Select the item, use the left and right cursor keys to select the
requested state.
Buttons:
A button starts an action each time you "press" it.
Mouse:
Click on the button you want (e.g. "+1" will show the next entry)
Keyboard:
Select the item, press the space bar to "press" the button.
Or use the shortcuts shown above.
Edit fields:
In an edit field, you can enter a value you wish to search for, e.g. a call.
You can only enter text in an selected edit field, so the first thing to do
is to select the wanted field. Once selected, enter your text. The
Delete key or the Backspace key can be used to delete unwanted text.
How to use the menu
To select commands by using the mouse, click on the menu (e.g. "File") and
than on the requested command (e.g. "Print label").
To select commands by keyboard: Use the F10 key to select the menu. Once
the menu is selected, you can navigate in the menu with cursor keys. The
Enter key opens a menu like "File" or select a command like "Print
label". The ESC key cancels the selection you made.
A faster way to open a menu you want is to use the menu's shortcut (the
highlighted character in the menus name). Example: Pressing Alt+F opens
the "File" menu.
HOW TO USE THE SEARCH FEATURES:
To find an entry by call, do the following:
1. Select the "Call" edit field
2. Type in the call sign you are looking for. The wanted call sign will be
displayed in the field "Call" on the screen.
3. Press [Enter]
4. The program displays the entry or a message explaining that an entry
does not exist for this call sign. In this case, the program tries to
display a similar entry.
To find an entry by name or city (U.S. database only):
1. Select the U.S. database by pressing Ctrl+U.
2. Press
F3 for searching by name
F4 for searching by city
3. The "Search by Name" or the "Search by City" dialog appears. In the
dialog, the edit field "Name" or "City" is activated. Type in the
text you are looking for and
4. Press [Enter]
5. The program displays the entry or a message explaining that an entry does
not exist for this text. In this case, the program tries to display
a similar entry.
To find an entry by County or ZIP (U.S. database only):
1. Select the U.S. database by pressing Ctrl+U.
2. Select the
"ZIP" field for searching for ZIP or the
"County" fields for searching for county
3. Type in the text you are looking for and
4. Press [Enter]
5. The program displays the entry or a message explaining that an entry does
not exist for this text. In this case, the program tries to display
a similar entry.
NAVIGATION:
Navigation allows you to see the next/previous entry. This will help you
find the correct entry if there are several entries for a name, city,
county or ZIP.
Use the "-1000", "-100", etc. buttons to see the previous or next entries.
You can use their shortcuts for faster access:
Key Moves...
Up 1 entry back
PgUp 10 entries back
Ctrl+PgUp 100 entries back
Ctrl+Home 1000 entries back
Down 1 entry forward
PgDn 10 entries forward
Ctrl+PgDn 100 entries forward
Ctrl+End 1000 entries forward
U.S. database only:
Navigation can be switched. To do this, select in the "Sort by"
radio buttons the sort order you want.
When using the international database, navigation always refers to
call signs.
PRINTING A LABEL:
*IMPORTANT! READ PRINT.TXT ON THE CD-ROM IF YOU HAVE ANY PROBLEMS WITH
PRINTING LABELS*
You can print the current entry by pressing Ctrl+P or by choosing
the "Print label" command from the "File" menu.
The program will send the current entry to your printer. Some printers
(mainly laser printers) print whole pages only. To eject the page
currently in your printer, use the "Send form feed" command in the "File"
menu or press Ctrl+F.
The dimensions of the labels you want to use can be entered in the "Set
label (printing) options" dialog. To open the dialog, choose the
"Labels..." command from the "Options" menu.
The "Set style options" dialog (choose "Style..." in the "Options" menu)
lets you add the call sign to the label.
EXPORT:
To export addresses into a file, choose a filename you want in the "Outfile"
field in the "Set label (printing) options" dialog. After this, all
printing label commands will not be printed but written into your file.
Please note that a filename *must* include the drive and path information.
(This information is the "C:\" in the default export filename). This is
very important. Forgetting the drive and path will cause the program to
try to create the export file on the CD-ROM, which will lead to an error
(ie. "File access denied").
